Joseph Grafton merchant agent journal, 1781-1788; bulk: 1781-1784.

Joseph Grafton's merchant agent journal details a shipping voyage from Salem, Mass., to Havana, Cuba, Savannah, Ga., and Charleston, S.C., on board the brig Romulus, schooner Betsy, and sloops Betsy and Polly, Aug. 1781-June 1784. The journal/logbook includes a list of vessels entering and leaving Havana, 1781-1784, and a letterbook, 1781, 1787-1788. In addition, it includes a description of Savannah and Saint Augustine, Florida; notes on privateering and a capture at sea; the miscarriage of a woman on board; naval medicine; and equipment and supplies aboard ship, specifically provisions. During Grafton's voyages, the following ships were spoken: the brigs Aurora and Don Galez (both out of Salem), Catherine, Delight (out of Boston), Greyhound, Herbina (out of Newburyport), Industry, Juno, Mary Ann, Patty, Peace & Plenty, Queen Spain (out of Boston), Ranger, Romulus (out of Salem), Speedwell, and Unity (out of New London); the schooners Charming Jenny and Nancy (both out of Virginia), Havana, Mercury, and Oxford (out of Baltimore); the sloops Columbia and Rebecca; the ships Fox (out of Falmouth), Grand Monarch (out of Newburyport), Joshua, Juno, Patty (out of Salem), Philadelphia, and Rambler (out of Beverly, Mass.); and the vessel (of unknown rigging) Hawke.
